When a jackpot prize amount is not claimed within the required time limit, each of the participating states gets all the money back that they contributed. California distributes its unclaimed MEGA Millions jackpot prize funds to education.

 Does the California Lottery pay individual prizes to group winners?
The California Lottery is allowed to give individual payments to members of a player group who has won a prize paid in annual installments or a player group who has chosen the SuperLOTTO Plus Cash Option as long as the group does not consist of more than 100 winners. If you are a lottery group member, you may claim your portion of the winnings on a Lottery Multiple Ownership Claim Form which is available at any Lottery District Office.
