Daily 4 Draw Details
Entering a Daily 4 draw is incredibly easy, as all you have to do is choose four numbers between 1 and 9, and you can even choose the same number more than once if you wish. Even if you don’t have four numbers you want to enter it’s easy, as all you have to do is tick the ‘Quick Pick’ box and they will be randomly chosen for you.
The tricky part comes when you decide which way you think your numbers will match those that are drawn. There are three different play styles:
Straight: This is the simplest of the three methods as you are just aiming to match your four numbers against those four that are drawn in the exact same order. The prizes you get for matching all the numbers in order will be the highest available, but that’s because it has the longest odds of all the prize tiers.
Box: Here you are aiming to match the four numbers that are drawn but in any order, so your four numbers just need to match the four that are drawn regardless of if they are drawn first, second, third or fourth. Prizes in this tier will be slightly lower than for the straight playstyle as players are far more likely to match them in any order than in the exact order.
Straight/Box combination: As the name suggests, this enters your four numbers into both the straight and the box playstyles with your $1 entry fee being split between the two. If you match all four numbers in the exact order then you will win roughly half the Straight prize and half the Box prize. If you match the four drawn numbers in any order then you will just win half the Box prize. This playstyle has the highest chance of winning as you are playing two playstyles at once, but the prizes will be lowest possible of the three.
See the table below which gives examples of the different numbers you can enter for each playstyle and the required numbers needed to win a prize payout for those tiers. You can use this table to check your own numbers by substituting the numbers on your ticket into the ‘Example Numbers’ column and checking if the drawn numbers match any of those in the ‘Draw numbers needed to win’ column.

All lottery prizes in the state of California are Pari-mutuel, meaning they will vary from draw to draw depending on the prize fund, with all the winners in a single tier winning the same amount. This differs to Daily 4 in other states where the prizes may be fixed or offer specific payouts based on the amount you wager on your numbers being drawn.
All prizes are valid for 180 days after the draw date, after which they cannot be claimed and will be added to the California Education fund like all non-claimed lottery winnings.
